3 Reasons Why You Need to Be Where You Are

Updated: Aug 10, 2020

Trust that you are always in the right place at the right time.

There is always a reason for why we are where we are.

I was on set of a series watching a rehearsal play out as follows. The director was doing a walk through of a scene and changed the scene all around. He was cutting the dialog left and right, making it all the more about the essentials of the scene. He was questioning the motives. What would be said and what wouldn't? The showrunner was beside him trying to figure out the scene and motives as well. They played off each other.

And in that moment I was so in the moment of what was happening that I realized, that's why I'm here. Here, in this room. I brought it up against my experiences of directors I've worked with wanting to switch up things just because they wanted a say in it. Instead of trying to understand where the scene came from or where the story was going, they wanted to make it "better" by changing it. And here I was, witnessing a true collaboration. A collaboration where one makes a good suggestion, another piggy backs off of it, then another "yes and's" it, and it blossoms. At this moment, it's not a critique, it's an experience.

I was meant to be right there, at that time. I was meant to witness this not only to learn but also to see that it's possible, and it can happen in my life. It may have been something I was wondering, or maybe didn't know I needed to know, or didn't know how I would even find out. But there I was learning it, uncovering it right in front of me. This was why I was there. I thought, "I'm supposed to be here. I'm not supposed to be at a show or watching The Perfectionists spinoff premiere. I'm here to learn a valuable lesson." For where I'm going, there are not many rules, so by seeing different scenarios play out, I can see how to act, react, and be in my future.

On the same note of being present where you are, someone asked me this week how to network your way to the top. I said,

Don't meet people based on their titles, meet people for who they are. (Tweet this.)

Meet them because you like them. You can't rush connections. You will meet and you will like each other, and you will build trust. But not everyone is going to like you and you are not going to like everyone. And that's okay. Be okay with that. Be where you're supposed to be. Be confident, be yourself, don't try to impress anyone. Be present.

You're supposed to meet who you meet because you are supposed to be where you are.

Another way of being where you're supposed to can happen because you are meant to help someone. One time, my friend went into the metro station after we hung out only to witness an old man being robbed and pushed down an escalator. He was the only witness and stayed to help and do a police report. I know how that is. I've been that person. I have been the only person to witness a robber. No, it's not a great experience but that's what life is about. I'm not trying to scare you. You are here to help and be helped. It's a circle of life.

Life is about give and take. It's about helping and learning.

I wholeheartedly believe we are where we are supposed to be. We have to be aware or our surroundings and be present. We have to see the lessons, witness what's in front of us. Help.

So here are the 3 Reasons Why You Need to Be Where You Are:

1. You need to learn. You need to see the path of where you're going. If you are not yet where you want to be, watch for the lessons to learn, things you don't know yet that you need for where you're going. There are some stepping stones on the way.

There have been so many times in my life where I was so happy something I wanted didn't happen sooner, because I wouldn't have been prepared for it. And there are a few things that I rushed that I shouldn't have.

2. You need to do the work. Something doesn't come from nothing. Put in the work in the right way. Future you is an extension of you. You can't jump hoops just by muscling your way in, but you can put in the work. Don't come at what you want from the place of stress and anxiety. Give it room. Give it patience. Give it time. And then it will play out like this:

You arrive to the day and everything works out perfectly. Your preparation meets your opportunity. You are at the right place at the right time. And notice, those are the times that everything feels easy, goes smoothly, and works out for the best. You are with the best people, you seem on cloud nine, you go with the flow. Everyone seems to be on the same page and you just feel like you are meant to be where you are meant to be. Wow, it feels so good, doesn't it? Everyone gets you, you have human to human interactions, no one is trying to impress anyone. Everything seems perfect and it's not even all fireworks and celebrations. It feels even and calm. It's cool and collected. And then something great happens. Or a great realization hits you. You breathe in, look to the sky, and feel the goosebumps all over your body. You've been waiting for this moment and now you are completely immersed in the presence of it. You are present. You are so thankful you waited, since you knew all along it was coming.

3. Being present teaches you to be vigilant and you may help someone in need.

And be sure of this:

Everything happens at the right time. Trust the timing. Trust yourself. Allow the timing, the lessons, the learning, the understanding, the preparation to lead you where you are supposed to be. (Tweet this.)
